The previous decade has witnessed extraordinary achievements of the handset world in general and some handset OEMs in spectacular. These milestones are clearly described in an interesting infographic called “A Decade of Handsets” published by the market analysis and strategy firm VisionMobile.
The handset maker Nokia has ranked the top spot during ten years, selling around 3,080,000,000 handsets in total, more than the amount of handsets sold by second, third and fourth places summed up. The next manufactures after Nokia are Samsung (1,300,000,000 handsets sold), Motorola (1,000,000,000 units), LG (635,000,000 units) and Sony Ericsson (540,000,000 units).

In 2001, Nokia topped the list of five handset OEMs followed by Motorola, Siemens, Samsung and Ericsson. Two years later, Samsung bettered its sales to reach number three while Siemens fell down to the fourth position
Years 2004-2006

In the period, Siemens lost their position and was replaced by LG
Years 2007-2009

2008 witnessed the rise of LG, which improved its position to come the third while Nokia still maintained its first rank. Total handsets sold in the years 2007-2009 were nearly 3.6 million units
Year 2010

Last year, two giants Apple and RIM entered the “top five” list while Motorola and Sony Ericsson were out the door. Besides, Nokia, Samsung and LG continued to maintain their position. 2010 also saw a constant increase in the number of handsets sold every year, the crore handsets in 2001 were sold 40 crore units but the figure rose to 140 in 2010
