Not many people know this but a "Crash" isn't the same as a "Freeze", the two may seem the same but they are different from each other. A crash is when the computer can't process a request and then it shuts down or restarts or shows the BSoD (Blue Screen of Death). A freeze is when the computer cannot read a file because it is confused or because the user is trying to do too many things at once and the computer can't keep up with the requests. These are common effects of the Windows 7 operating system; many people are experiencing these effects on their computers or laptops.

The causes of such effects can range from mild to serious, however it is most likely that they are only mild causes as the symptoms aren't that serious. The causes of Windows 7 crashing are as follows:

  • Specific files aren't readable
  • Files have been damaged or corrupt
  • The registry has some issues.
  • (If you can think of any more then add them)

The causes above each contribute to Windows 7 becoming an unreliable system at times because of crashes that people are experiencing. On the contrary to what's been said, these problems can be fixed by following some steps, which have resulted from extensive research. The following tutorial will explain to you how to repair and prevent Windows 7 from crashing in the future.

The first thing you should do is to access something called the 'Startup Manager'. Whenever we turn on our computers, the Startup Manager then has a list of programs and processes that need to be loaded up during the 'Boot' process. Having too many programs and processes during the boot process can make the computer become very slow because there are so many functions that it has to do, so it is recommended that you minimize the number of programs and processes that are requested during the boot process. To do this simply Click Start > Run > type msconfig and press enter > Then select Startup from the tabs and disable some programs and processes from the list.

Following on from the Startup Manager you should then proceed to remove any unwanted/unnecessary programs from your system as this can severely clog up the computer's memory. To remove any unwanted/unnecessary programs from your system, Click Start > Control Panel > Uninstall a Program then proceed to remove any programs that you don't use or think might be useless. Once you have completed that it is recommended that you perform an anti-virus scan of your entire system. This is to ensure that your computer has not been infected with any sort of rogue virus, which might be causing your computer to crash and fail. To perform an anti-virus scan please use the instructions provided by the anti-virus program you have.

Finally it is highly recommended that you execute a scan of the registry using a registry cleaner. The registry cleaner will scan your entire computer and locate any erratic files that are causing your system to fail. The registry is a very important place and is vital to ensure the computer functions and operates correctly, because very important files are stored inside the registry. Such files are DLLs (Dynamic Link Library) which act as instructions, which tell the computer what to do under certain conditions. These instructions are an integral part of any computer as it aids in so many different processes and requested, without the registry it would be very difficult to use a computer.
